16 Days of Activism: Standing Together for Change

As 25th November approaches, communities around the world prepare to mark the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, a day that also marks the beginning of the global 16 Days of Activism campaign. At My Sisters’ House, this moment is deeply significant. It is a time to reaffirm our shared commitment to ending all forms of gender-based violence. The theme for 2025 is 'UNiTE to End Digital Violence Against All Women and Girls', focusing on the growing threat of online harassment, image-based abuse, and digital coercive control.

This date is also recognised in the UK as White Ribbon Day, a day that calls on men and women alike to take a stand. The White Ribbon pledge - to never commit, excuse, or remain silent about violence against women - reminds us that meaningful change must involve everyone. Ending gender-based violence is not solely a women’s issue; it is a community responsibility, and one that requires courage, compassion, and consistent action. Here’s a few ways we can all make a difference this year:

Gathering in Solidarity: Candle-lit Vigil in Chichester

To open the 16 Days of Activism, the West Sussex Women’s Institute has organised a candle-lit vigil at the Market Cross in Chichester City Centre. My Sisters’ House will proudly stand in solidarity at this important gathering, and we invite you to join us. As we come together by the Christmas Tree, candles glowing in the winter darkness, we create a space for reflection, remembrance, and resolve. There will be stories from various speakers including a team member from My Sisters’ House and a chance to remember those who have lost their lives to violence.

When we meet, we unite and honour survivors, support those currently struggling, and recommit ourselves to the work still ahead.

The Spirit of the 16 Days

Here in West Sussex, we are proud to contribute to this international effort through events that centre compassion, connection, and hope. Here are some of the ways people are raising awareness and offering support:

Southeast Community Rail Partnership & WSCC

25th November Southeast Community Rail Partnership & WSCC, launch their ‘Your Community Cares’ Campaign in which handmade white woolen hearts will be given out to gently promote safety, kindness, and community connection across our local rail network. These hearts will be distributed by volunteers at multiple stations including Chichester, offering a soft, symbolic gesture of care to passengers, staff, and local businesses.

Arun District Council and My Sisters’ House

We are pleased to be offering Cake and Hot drinks for local Central and Eastern European speaking women while providing an opportunity to find out about local health and wellbeing services that may be available to them.

The Charity Standing Together Against Domestic Abuse are hosting a series of online events which will include discussions on digital violence, trauma-informed responses, and the integration of digital abuse prevention into frontline practice and training. Breaking the Silence: Stories of Strength – 4th December

As part of this year’s campaign, My Sisters’ House is hosting Breaking the Silence: Stories of Strength, an evening devoted to the voices and lived experiences of women. Taking place at Arundel Town Hall on Thursday 4th December, the event is an opportunity to listen deeply and connect meaningfully.

The evening will feature women who have bravely chosen to share their personal stories shaped by challenge, resilience, and extraordinary courage. These testimonies shine a light on experiences that are too often hidden or dismissed, and they remind us of the power that comes from speaking out and being heard. Members of our team will also share insights into our ongoing work, illustrating the profound impact of community support and the life-changing difference made when women have safe, understanding spaces to turn to.

Guests will be welcomed with a drink and invited to enjoy a delicious selection of canapés as they settle into an atmosphere built around warmth, empathy, and solidarity. It will be an evening that celebrates women supporting women, and a reminder that when we lift one another up, extraordinary transformation becomes possible.
