Her Majesty The Queen: Behind Closed Doors.
Domestic abuse is an issue that affects women across all backgrounds, age groups, and communities. It’s not always easy to recognise, and for those trapped in these relationships, it’s even harder to escape. Watching the recent ITV documentary, Her Majesty The Queen: Behind Closed Doors, offers a window into the world of domestic abuse, shedding light on the painful realities women face and urging society to break the silence.
This documentary, featuring Queen Camilla, a tireless advocate against domestic violence, is a powerful reminder that abuse is not just a private issue but a societal one. In it, women come together to discuss the impact of coercive control, emotional manipulation, and physical violence. This documentary encourages open conversations about the devastating impact of abuse—a conversation that Queen Camilla believes is essential to breaking the cycle.
Cherie Blair, a prominent human rights lawyer featured in the documentary, explains, “Domestic abuse doesn’t have to be physical. It’s actually all about power and control.” These words resonate with many, helping raise awareness that abuse can take many forms, from psychological manipulation to physical harm, and the effects ripple through families, workplaces, and entire communities.
Domestic Abuse in Our Communities
“On average, one woman is killed by an abusive partner or ex every five days in England and Wales.”

This statistic is a stark reminder of the urgent need for change. At My Sisters’ House Women’s Centre, we work tirelessly to support women affected by domestic abuse. We provide a safe space where women can access resources and build a hopeful future, free from fear.
Our dedicated team includes specialists who offer compassionate support tailored to each woman’s needs, covering everything from emotional support and housing advice to financial guidance and employment training. In 2023 alone, we handled over 8,851 phone calls, made 928 wellbeing calls, triaged 1,610 women, and sent more than 12,000 emails. Every one of these interactions is a lifeline for a woman in need.

Join Us in Saying "No More"
Later this month, we’ll be participating in the annual 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, joining forces with other organisations to raise awareness and inspire action. Recent campaigns encouraging men to call out inappropriate behavior also emphasise that stopping domestic abuse isn’t just women’s work—it requires everyone’s participation.
As we continue these important conversations and work toward policy changes, we ask you to stand with us. Together, we can create a safer, more supportive world for women. Let’s unite, raise our voices, and help put an end to the silence around domestic abuse.
