The Names by Florence Knapp

After having The Names recommended to me by three different people, I finally borrowed it from the library this summer. I can honestly say it lived up to the hype.

Without giving too much away, the novel follows one family through three different versions of a boy's life, each shaped by the name he is given. Through these parallel stories, Florence Knapp explores how small moments can have a profound impact on the course of a life.

What particularly struck me was the way the book portrays different stages and experiences of domestic abuse. Knapp writes with sensitivity and insight, helping readers understand the complexities of coercion, fear, hope and resilience. As the story unfolds, you can't help but develop a deep sense of care and concern for Cora, her daughter Maia, and her son as each version of their future emerges.

While this is a work of fiction, it offers thoughtful reflections on the lasting impact that abuse can have on individuals and families, alongside the power of choice, love and support.
