We remember Gloria Steinem, one of the most influential feminist voices of the past century, whose life and work helped transform conversations about women's rights, equality and social justice around the world.
A journalist, writer, organiser and campaigner, Steinem dedicated her career to challenging inequality and creating a world where women could live with greater freedom, dignity and choice. At a time when many issues affecting women were overlooked or ignored, she brought them into public conversation, shining a light on domestic abuse, sexual violence, reproductive rights, discrimination and the unequal treatment of women in society and the workplace.
One of Steinem's most enduring contributions was her belief in the power of women coming together. Throughout her life, she worked alongside women from diverse backgrounds and championed the importance of listening to voices that had too often been marginalised. She recognised that meaningful change comes through solidarity, collective action and the courage to speak out.
As a co-founder of Ms. Magazine, Steinem helped create a platform for women's stories and perspectives at a time when mainstream media rarely reflected their experiences. Through both journalism and activism, she challenged the idea that women should simply accept the barriers placed in front of them. Her work extended across decades and continents, including campaigns for reproductive freedom, action against domestic violence and female genital mutilation, and support for LGBTQ+ rights and broader movements for equality and social justice.
For those of us working in women's services, Steinem's legacy can be seen in something far greater than any individual campaign or publication. Her work reinforced a simple but powerful truth: women's experiences matter, women's voices deserve to be heard, and no woman should have to face inequality or violence alone.
Steinem once described discovering feminism as being like "finding a family". It is a powerful reminder of what can happen when women find one another, share their experiences and stand together.
That spirit feels especially relevant to the work we do at My Sisters' House. Every day, we see women supporting women through difficult circumstances, rebuilding confidence, rediscovering their voices and creating new possibilities for their futures. The strength of our community reflects the same belief that collective support can help create lasting change.
We are grateful for Gloria Steinem's courage, leadership and lifelong commitment to equality. Her legacy continues to inspire individuals, organisations and movements working towards a fairer world for women and girls everywhere.
